I probably spend more time in my office than any other room in my house. I usually eat my breakfast at my computer desk, and sip my tea there throughout the day. It's where I write my blog, conduct research, compose scripts for all my presentations, write e-mails, and so much more.
When the last of our children left home, we turned the smallest bedroom into an office. At that time my hubby and I both had desktop computers, so two computer desks occupy the small room. I'm not a hoarder, but I do tend to be a bit of a packrat [please tell me there's a difference!!] when it comes to paperwork - hence the accumulation of 'piles'. My hubby gave up his desktop long ago in preference to a laptop, but the two desks have remained in the office.
I've known the office needed my attention for a very long time, but I also tend to be a procrastinator particularly when it comes to time-consuming, tedious projects. Over the weekend, however, I bit the bullet!
I follow Susan Herin's blog Between Naps on the Porch and love it. If you don't follow it, you really should. It's very informative on so many different subjects. Last week she shared her office, or what she refers to as her nest. Her desk and cabinets are Pottery Barn modular components. I particularly liked the corner desk since my room is small, and a corner desk utilizes every inch of space. The Pottery Barn associate said the Bedford Collection is their most popular seller.
Below is a photo of Susan's office. Unfortunately not all of her modular components are still available. She also shared a large compartmentalized cabinet from Ikea that she put in a closet. My hubby uses the closet in our office, so that's not an option for me, but I'm going to purchase it for one wall. A visit to Ikea is forthcoming.

Below is a photo of Susan's office. Unfortunately not all of her modular components are still available. She also shared a large compartmentalized cabinet from Ikea that she put in a closet. When I received Pottery Barn's e-mail informing me of their sale in progress, I decided to pay them a visit last Saturday, and I ordered the corner desk in addition to three cabinets. All the drawers are tongue-and-groove, and sturdily built.
Below is a picture of my current office. It's the 'before' photo, and I can't believe I'm actually posting it! You can see my piles of 'stuff', but I promise you they'll be gone when I get my new furniture. I can hardly wait for the two computer desks to be removed, and replaced by one new efficient one.
I'll be sure to post an 'after' photo when we're finished with the room. We're going to paint and get the carpeting cleaned before installing the new furniture. One project leads to 10! I like the light beige walls, but my hubby said he wouldn't re-paint if I stayed with the same color, so we're switching to a light green. It's a Benjamin Moore color called 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. My granddaughter has it in her living room and when we were there last week he commented that he really liked it. Of course, that means a new window treatment too. Stay tuned for photos of the finished room. Dismantling the current desks and painting will begin soon.
While I was at Somerset Mall on Saturday [where Pottery Barn is located] I paid a visit to a ladies' shop that my daughter-in-law told me about.
Aside from the beautiful feminine clothing, the store is unique because it's faith-based. Biblical verses are tastefully displayed throughout the store. I asked permission to take photos to share with you. I didn't purchase anything Saturday since my hubby was with me. Unlike me, he's not a shopper and buys everything he possibly can online, but I have to see what I'm purchasing. Their pricing was moderate, and they have a 'give back' policy. I'm anxious to return by myself.
If you're a local reader, be sure to pay them a visit the next time you're at Somerset. They're located on the second level, section S [near Macy's]. The cute, young sales associate told me to be sure to take a picture of their fitting rooms.
Since we parked near Macy's we entered the mall through their store and exited the same way. Just before exiting I spotted an encased J.L. Hudson's Department Store drinking fountain that was taken from the iconic downtown Detroit location. Hudson's once occupied Macy's current suburb location [sob, sob!]. Of course I HAD to take a picture of it .
Once in the parking lot my hubby asked, "Can we go home now?" Yes... but not before one more stop. Tomorrow's post.

ReplyDeletePhyllis, your office is going to be wonderful! I was noticing how the window in your office is a great height for the Bedford pieces, they will fit beautifully under it. I know you're going to love it when it's all done. I still enjoy mine so much after all these years.
ReplyDeleteAnd you're so right, 1 project leads to 10! lol Have you ever read the children's book, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie? You need to read that one if you haven't. A friend and I use that phrase now every single time we buy one thing that leads to purchasing 5 more things. lol
That fountain from Hudsons is amazing! Sooo pretty! You never see anything like that in stores now! Thanks for sharing that photo and the history behind it.
Oh, the memories of the JL Hudson Stores. My mom worked at the Hudson's store in Harper Woods for 25 years. That store became Marshall Fields and then Macy's and is now gone.
