Back from Washington, D.C.

Our plane landed at Detroit Metro Airport around 10:30 a.m. yesterday [Sunday, April 12th], and although Washington D.C. was wonderful, it's good to be back home again too!

There were Cherry Blossom Festival banners and advertisements everywhere.  The first one to greet us was at the airport's baggage pickup.

Beautiful cherry blossom trees decorated the airport embankments.  We were told they had blossomed just prior to our arrival, and would be at their peak over the next few days. The timing of our trip was perfect.

A hotel shuttle picked us up at the airport and transported us to our hotel, Residence Inn, Arlington Capital View, which would be our 'home' for five days.  It was constructed in 2011.

My two girlfriends and I loved our spacious room, complete with a kitchenette.  D.C.'s cherry blossom trees were a gift from Tokyo's mayor in 1912, so I ordered a tin of Harney & Son's Tokyo Breakfast tea for each of us to enjoy during our stay.   Very good tea!

The shuttle to the Metro station ran every 20 minutes.  We lined up in front of the hotel to catch it.

On day #1 we went to Hillwood Museum and Gardens - the estate of Marjorie Merriweather Post [heiress of Post Cereal Company], and that evening we took the night bus tour of Washington D.C.

I will share highlights of both in upcoming posts, but because I have a big presentation to prepare for this Saturday, I won't be resuming my regular blogging schedule yet.  I just wanted to let you know I'm back home safely, and had a GREAT time. There'll be many posts about the trip soon.

  2. Good to know you have returned home safely! What a wonderful adventure - and peak cherry blossom time! I thought about you when the situation at the Capitol building was taking place on Saturday. Yikes!

  3. Glad to hear you had a great trip and safely returned home. We were in D.C. a few years ago for the Cherry Blossom Festival and there wasn't a blossom in sight.
