PBS Home Fires

Are you getting antsy for the sixth and final season of Downton Abbey that will air in the United States on January 3rd?

If you don't want to wish away the remaining days of 2015, you can get your 'British fix' from the new PBS Masterpiece Theater series, Home Fires, which premiered on October 4th.

I first learned about it on the blog Life in My Empty Nest. I missed episode 1, but it was [and still is] available for viewing on the PBS website. There are six episodes in Season I which runs through November 8th.

The village of Great Paxford is the setting for the British drama that unfolds in 1939 with World War II looming.  The series was inspired by the book, Jambusters - the history of Britain's Women's Instituteby Julie Summers.

Samantha Bond plays the role of Frances Barden, the newly elected president of the Great Paxford Women's Institute.  You'll recognize her from Downton Abbey where she plays the role of Lady Rosamond Painswick, Lord Grantham's sister.

Tea is in every episode, and the series was reviewed as 'A British drama that's as warm as a cup of tea.'

Tune in this Sunday night for the second half of season 1.

  1. I am loving this fall season on PBS! I started with Indian Summer. I had a hard time understanding episode 1, but catching a behind the scenes special really helped. I also read a review that you really wouldn't understand much until episode 3, so I perserved and now I am on the edge of my seat!

Home Fires started week 2 of Indian Summers and is broadcast right before Indian Summers on our station. I immediately fell in love with each character! I am only sad that there are ONLY six episodes. I did see that the BBC has ordered a second season, but it hasn't even begun shooting.

I am also looking forward to the new drama which will premiere the same time as Downton - the one about a civil war hospital? It looks amazing!

And good news that a 2nd season of Grantchester, with that adorable vicar is currently filming, too.

We cancelled our cable and have had no problem entertaining ourselves with all this great programing!!

  2. I have never gotten "into" Downton Abbey but I might have to check this one out. I've been enjoying "The Great British Baking Show" for my Britain fix!

  4. Loving it! And also can't wait till the new PBS series Mercy Street about two Civil War nurses starts shortly after Downton Abbey. What would we do without Masterpiece Theater?
