The Russian Tea Room, NYC

The last thing on our itinerary for day #2 in New York City was visiting the Russian Tea Room.  I was in 'tea heaven' visiting two tea rooms and having Afternoon Tea at a fabulous hotel all in one day!

Since our reservations were for 6:30 p.m. it was past the hours the Russian Tea Room offers Afternoon Tea, and we wouldn't have wanted two in one day anyway.

The Russian Tea Room was founded in 1927 by members of the Russian Imperial Ballet who fled to America following the Revolution.

Because of the evening hour, I didn't order tea, but Jerry did, and it was served in a tea glass set in a podstakannik, with accompanying sugar cubes and cherries [similar to cherry preserves or cherry pie filling] just like in Russia.  He ordered Earl Grey black tea. I didn't think cherries and Earl Grey would be a good combination, but it was actually quite good.

We ordered off the dinner menu.  Jerry and Sharon each ordered an all vegetable entrée.  [I couldn't find it listed on their current online menu and I didn't write the name down when we were there.]

Steve and I each ordered Boeuf à la Stroganoff - Red wine-braised beef short ribs with thick noodles tossed in creamy mushroom and black truffle cream sauce.  It was yummy!

On my next visit to NYC I'll try their Afternoon Tea [which looks very good on their website], and maybe take in a concert at nearby Carnegie Hall. Needless to say, the tea room's décor is Russian style with lots of samovars, and a display of Fabergé inspired Venetian glass eggs.

When we finished at the Russian Tea Room we took a taxi back to our room at the brownstone row house.  Six sights/activities were crammed into day #2.  In Biblical King James English it could be stated like this: 'The evening and the morning was the second day, and it was very good'!  ;-)

Next post will be about our visit to Brooklyn, New York...

  2. Once upon a time I was staying in a hotel around the corner from this tearoom. I peeked in the window, but it wasn't open right then. How I would have loved having tea here. So glad you got to enjoy dinner there.

  5. I love Russian tea rooms but have never been to the one in NY. My main foreign language is Russian through high school and university, and growing up by San Francisco visited many there. Nice memories! You have more stamina then we do nowadays! Whew! What a program! You'll have to have a holiday to recover! Thanks so much for linking to Tuesday Cuppa Tea!
