Hudson's Presentation for the Philip Livingston DAR Chaper

Last year, I was contacted by a member of the Philip Livingston Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution [DAR] in Howell, Michigan to be the guest speaker at their April 9th meeting.  A few of their members had heard my J.L. Hudson presentation at an Afternoon Tea at O'Mara's Restaurant in October, 2014, and requested that I be contacted for a program.  Time passed quickly, and the date arrived last Saturday.

Their meetings are held in the parlor of the First United Methodist Church in Howell.  The meeting was called to order at 1:00 o'clock, but my hubby and I arrived at noon to set-up.   I kid you not, that's snow on the ground, on April 9th [and we got more snow on Sunday]!  We drove through several snow squalls before arriving in Howell, and attendance was said to be down due to the weather.

Their chapter was organized in 1908.  The Regent opened the meeting promptly at 1:00 o'clock with the DAR Ritual, Pledge of Allegiance, The American's Creed, Daughter's Pledge, and Preamble to the Constitution.

I especially like The American's Creed: "I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people, whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a Republic, a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect Union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.  I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its constitution; to obey its laws; to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies." ~ William Tyler Page

When those were said, I was introduced by Andrea [the gracious lady who contacted me to speak].

My hubby counted 24 ladies in attendance, so it was a lovely group to speak to.  Almost all of them had fond memories of shopping at Hudson's downtown Detroit store.

I was delighted to meet a former J.L. Hudson's employee.  Diane worked at Hudson's in Northland Mall [where she met her husband], then she worked at another Hudson's store in a different mall. She worked in the Bridal registry department.  I always enjoy meeting former Hudson employees, and I loved that she wore her employee's name tag.

After the program a luncheon was served - a variation of Hudson's famous Maurice Salad.

While the ladies were eating Jerry and I quickly moved the display case out in the hallway, so I could pack things up while they were having their DAR meeting.

Thank you Philip Livingston Chapter for a wonderful afternoon, and for the opportunity to share my interest and fondness for J.L. Hudson's Department Store with you.

  1. I'm sure the ladies who braved the snow to attend this meeting, really enjoyed your presentation. I like that creed, and how great that a former Hudson's employee was present.
