Sunday Reflection...

Handel's Messiah, an English language oratorio, composed in 1741 by George Frideric Handel, still awes listeners 256 years after his death.

The music was completed in 24 days and at the end of his manuscript Handel wrote the letters "SDG" - Soli Deo Gloria, "To God alone the glory."

Messiah is Handel's best-known work, with performances particularly popular during the Christmas season.

There are many names and titles of Jesus in the Messiah... Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace to name just a few.

The Hallelujah Chorus [God's Triumph] is the culmination of Part II, and one conductor said the feelings of joy one gets from hearing it is second to none.

It is said Handel's assistant walked into his room while he was composing the piece and found Handel in tears. When asked what was wrong, Handel held up the score to the movement and said, "I thought I saw the face of God."

I love the lyrics below in the Hallelujah Chorus:

For the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth,
Hallelujah!  Hallelujah!  Hallelujah!  Hallelujah!

... And He shall reign for ever and ever,
For ever and ever, forever and ever,

King of kings, and Lord of lords...
Hallelujah!  Hallelujah!  Hallelujah!  Hallelujah!  Hallelujah!

This week when you turn on the television news or pick up a newspaper filled with doom and gloom, sing the words to the Hallelujah Chorus, and know that God has promised better days ahead for those who love and serve Him!

May God bless your week!

  1. Absolutely! I have always loved it...and have been a soloist with symphonies before...but still every time I hear it I cry...makes it difficult to sing! But the entire oratorio is a Christmas constant here at our home. Thanks for your wonderful post!
