Meeting Mr. J.L. ["Joe"] Hudson, Jr.

On Tuesday, September 23rd, I attended a program entitled, "Remembering Hudson's with Joe Hudson" at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial.  Joe Hudson is the great-nephew of Joseph Lowthian Hudson, founder of Detroit's iconic department store, J.L. Hudson's.

The event was sponsored by the Grosse Pointe Public Library, but due to the overwhelming response it was moved to the Fries Auditorium at the War Memorial.

A 30-minute film about Hudson's department store was shown, followed by a question and answer period with Joe Hudson [pictured below].

I've had written communication with Mr. Hudson over my book project, but what a privilege to actually meet him following the program.

He became president of J.L. Hudson's in 1961 at 29 years of age, which makes him 82 years of age now.  He has aged well.

Local readers, I will be presenting a Hudson's program at O'Mara's restaurant in Berkley, MI [2555 12 Mile Rd.] at their 12:00 noon Tuesday Teas on October 14, 21, and 28th.  Menu will feature foods that were served at Hudson's restaurants including their signature Maurice Salad and Chicken Pot Pie.  Reservations are advised by calling [248] 399-6750. Cost is $31 which includes tax and gratuity.  If you're able to come, please introduce yourself to me.  I'd love to meet you!

For those in the Milford area, I will be presenting the same program at the Milford Public Library on Thursday, October 16th at 6:30 p.m.  The library address is 330 Family Dr., Milford, MI.
