Sweet D's Confections and Tea Room

An August 12th outing took me to Sweet D's Confections and Tea Room in Linden, MI - 55 North West of where I live. I journeyed there with Barb Gulley, Detroit Examiner's Tea Editor.

The tea room moved to its present location - a quaint Victorian house built in 1890 - on April 9th of this year, with the capacity to accommodate up to 25 guests at one time.

It was a rainy day, but that didn't hinder our reservations.

It was my first time to visit Linden - designated a Michigan Historic Site - and I'd like to return to visit all its quaint shops.

The tea room's charming interior.

Our table with green menus awaiting our selection.

Fresh flowers in a teacup adorned our table.

I ordered Darjeeling tea.  It was served in a beautiful teacup.

We ordered the English Afternoon Tea which consisted of soup [on this day they served homemade 'Charming Chowder'], Tea Sandwiches, Scones, and Desserts.  It was $23 per person, and the food was delicious and plentiful.

The first course consisted of a Fresh Fruit Salad and Four Sandwiches: Marinated Cucumber on White Bread Rounds, Chicken Salad on Cranberry Raisin Bread, Apricot Jam and Fresh Sliced Strawberries on Wheat Bread, and Fresh Mozzarella and Tomato on Rye.  There were also two Miniature Egg Cheddar Quiches.

This is Dee the owner.  She credits her grandmother for her love of Afternoon Tea.  She and her mother opened a successful tea room in Oscoda, MI in 1999 before she moved to Linden, where they hosted quarterly theme teas and taught etiquette.  Dee is also a beautician and specializes in Victorian wig styling.  She was preparing to head off to Mackinac Island where she was a guest of the Grand Hotel during their annual Somewhere in Time weekend.

Barb and me enjoying our tea time.

The scones [lower left] were blueberry and a wedge of lemon bread, accompanied by lemon curd, and Devonshire Cream.  Everything is homemade by Dee.  I wonder when she sleeps??

This was the dessert tray with jumbo Chocolate Covered Strawberries, Lemon Bar, Chocolate Brownie, and cookies.  We had to have take-out boxes for these, because there was one last dessert still to come...

"Whim Wam" - English for trifle.

Barb and I waddled out of the tea room with very full tummies!  It was a lovely afternoon. Sweet D's doesn't have a website, but they are on Facebook.

  6. I was so glad to see you mentioned the Tea Room's "charming interior". Decorating is yet another one of Dee's talents. Pictures cannot not do justice to the decor; you will need to see the faux fireplace mantle with a red insert and peacock feather wreath for yourself!
