Lewis & Clark State Park, North Dakota

The state park was perfect for the kids and provided lots of fun activities.  They rode their bikes as they explored the park...

They played at the playground...

And went to the beach.

The state park is situated on one of the upper bays of Lake Sakakawea, and has 14 miles of shoreline.

I'm not a water or sun person.  I burn and blister if I'm in the sun for any length of time, so I stayed at the campsite and sat in the shade reading magazines I brought from home while the family enjoyed the beach.

They skipped stones...

Had fun in the water...  All three kids are like fish and are great swimmers.

Landon was enjoying 'the life of Riley' [photo below], but he wouldn't have a clue what that 1880's phrase [taken from a song] means.  ;-)  Do you remember the Life of Riley comedy TV show that aired from 1949 to 1958 starring William Bendix?

Izzy creatively took some small stones to leave her name in the sand.

I'm a confirmed city slicker.  I don't like flies, mosquitoes [North Dakota gets the prize for the biggest ones I've ever seen!], ticks and other bugs.  I'm also not a fan of public showers and restrooms, but I must confess that being at the campsite was such a nice reprieve from the doom and gloom doled out on TV and radio every day, and in newspapers and the Internet.  It was wonderful taking a break from stories of social and racial unrest, COVID-19, and politics.  I didn't miss the media's numerous forms one bit!

When Jerry and I walked around the campground, we noticed almost all the license plates on campers and vehicles were from North Dakota.  Lewis and Clark State Park is their gold nugget, and camping definitely seems to be one of their favorite past-times.  It's relaxing, peaceful, and a temporary escape from the cares and stress of everyday life.   There was hiking, boating, water skidooing, and fishing opportunities that we didn't do during our stay.  We liked the spaciousness of the camping lots too, so if you're a camper with plans to travel to North Dakota, check out this state park.  Thanks, Jeremy, for finding it and planning the itinerary for the entire trip.

Our evening campfires were the perfect ending to every day.

to be continued...

  1. I am a shade-lover, too, and I don't want to camp ever again except possibly in a motor home. I visited my daughter and granddaughter at a nearby campground over the weekend but went home to sleep in my own bed.

  2. As soon as I read "The Life of Riley" William Bendix's face popped into my head. Why or how I remembered that I have no idea. That was a loooooong time ago.

I belong to the "The best thing about going outside is coming in again" school of thought.
