Day 3 on Queen Mary 2

It was Sunday [Aug. 20], and we didn't discover until afterwards that Queen Mary 2 offers a 10:00 a.m. interdenominational service on the Sabbath.  It's a traditional Maritime Church Service led by the ship's Captain and is held in the Royal Court Theatre.  There's also a separate Catholic Mass since a Catholic priest sails on the ship permanently.

At breakfast, we sat with a couple from Ontario, Canada and another from England.  We met the nicest people on board the ship.

Afterwards I went to the Grand Lobby to check e-mail messages and send some texts while Jerry went up to the Observation Deck [11th deck].  The captain had informed us the night before that it would be a foggy day, so Jerry quickly returned saying it was windy, wet and cold.

Our stateroom had a TV with limited options.  The movies, "The King's Speech" and "An Affair to Remember" - a 1957 Cary Grant movie that took place on a transatlantic oceanliner named, SS Constitution, played repeatedly.  Both were appropriate for the Queen Mary 2. [The Titanic was not shown!  ;-)].  By the end of the voyage we watched both movies a couple of times.

At 3:00 p.m. we went down to The Queen's Room to get a table for Afternoon Tea at 3:30.

The live entertainment that day was a harpist.

I wrote in my notes that the savories I selected were turkey with cranberry on white bread and smoked salmon on a brioche bun.  Desserts were an apple tart and a mini-lemon Bundt cake. Scones were currant. The strawberry jam was from Wilkin & Sons, Ltd., Colchester, England.

At 6:00 we went down to Britannia dining room for dinner.  From 6:00 p.m. on, the dress code changed from casual to smart attire - collared shirts and trousers for men [jackets optional], and evening tops, skirts, and dresses for ladies.  As always in today's society, there were a few rebels, but almost everyone adhered to the dress code.

I ordered the traditional Sunday Roast Beef dinner with veggies and popover.  Dinner is always so formal that I never had the nerve to take any photos of the food, but trust me, the presentation was beautiful and it tasted as good as it looked.

Later, back in our stateroom, the captain came over the loud speaker saying there was a medical emergency and one of the passengers was going to be picked up by helicopter and transported to a hospital in Newfoundland, which would require us temporarily going slightly off course [not that most of us would have known the difference].  The 13th deck was closed to all passengers prior to the helicopter landing.  Our prayers were with whoever experienced the medical emergency and became unable to complete the voyage.

To be continued...
