Valentine's Day and Backyard Tree Removal

I hope you had a Happy Valentine's Day.  It was a quiet one for my hubby and me, but a nice one.  I baked a Carrot Cake from scratch for my daughter and son-in-law's fourth Wedding Anniversary. They were married on Valentine's Day so it's easy to remember.  This is Dave's favorite cake and the one I made for their wedding, so it's become a tradition to make a Carrot Cake every year on their anniversary.

Last fall we had a tree removal company come out to give us an estimate on removing two large Maple trees from our backyard.  They were only a couple of feet tall when we planted them in 1978 when we moved into our new home.  One was from my parent's backyard Maple tree and the other from my in-laws.  We had no idea how mammouth they'd become over 45 years!  While they shaded our backyard in the summer, my hubby worried about their roots disrupting the underground sewers or them falling on our house during a storm [both had split trunks], so he said they had to come down.  After several postponements from the tree removal company, they finally came yesterday.

Happy sight for my hubby yesterday!

Tree #2

When the left yesterday tree #2 was at this stage.

Even though today is a sunny, warm day [57 degrees], it was too windy for them to finish taking it down, so they'll return tomorrow to finish the job.  All the shade will be gone from our backyard now, but my hubby will rest easier.

On another subject... I've been having lots of computer woes which is why I haven't posted in a while.  My computer is nine years old and has served me very well.  I thought it was dying over the weekend because it was running so slow and wouldn't let me access blogger, e-mails or photo files. Our tech guy said there was nothing he could do to resolve the issues and recommended an upgraded computer.  To my amazement however, when I restarted it this morning it allowed me to access everything including uploading the photos from my iPhone for this post.  Go figure!  While it's in working order I've been diligently transferring all the photos on my  hard drive to a backup device so I don't lose them if my computer decides to fail again.  If you don't see another post from me within a reasonable amount of time, you'll know I'm out shopping for a new computer.  I hate the thought of having to learn Windows 11 [I have Windows 10], but technology never stays the same.

  1. Good luck with the computer and good idea to remove the trees. Here in S/W Michigan the wind and storms have brought down quite a few trees in my area; thankfully not on my home though. As for Windows 11, don't fear. I had Windows 8 and bought a new desktop with Windows 11 last year and the transition was as easy as could be.

  2. I got a new computer in November and the change from Windows 10 to Windows 11 was nothing. It takes me a second to remember how to turn it off - but nothing like the week it took me to learn with Windows 10. That really was a learning curve.

  3. Oh dear, I see double whammy expenses here. We are going to have some trimming of very large trees in our yard so I know about that! Best wishes on the computer shopping. I try to keep learning all the time but it is a challenge. Best regards!

  4. I'm glad your computer decided to cooperate again! And I sympathize about the trees. A huge maple tree outside my office window at church had been slowly dying, and was taken down recently. I've just retired after working in that office for 31 years, and I was able to snag a limb from that tree to have something carved from it. Unknown to me, one of our church members got a larger piece, and made a beautiful charcuterie board for me, which he presented to me when I retired. What a treasure!
