John Wesley was born in England in 1703, and he died there in 1791. He received his training at Oxford University, and was an ordained priest in the Anglican church. John, along with his brother Charles, and another cleric, George Whitefield, are credited with forming the Methodist church.
We have been studying Wesleyan perspectives at church, and I love what John Wesley said about the Bible: "I am a spirit come from God and returning to God; just hovering over the great gulf, till a few moments hence I am no more seen - I drop into an unchangeable eternity! I want to know one thing, the way to heaven - how to land safe on that happy shore. God Himself has condescended to teach the way: for this very end He came from heaven. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the Book of God...!"
I'm grateful for the Bible that not only teaches us "how to land safe on that happy shore [heaven]," but how to live a contented, purposeful life on this earth too.
